Ooni Koda 12 vs Koda 16 (and the New Koda 2 Range)

As an Amazon Associate, Pizza Oven Radar earns from qualifying purchases. Product details below come from current manufacturer listings; availability and prices change often.

The Koda 12 and Koda 16 were Ooni’s best-selling gas ovens for years, and plenty of people still search for one or the other. The key differences are simple: the Koda 12 is a small, very portable 12-inch oven with a single rear burner. The Koda 16 is a bigger 16-inch oven with an L-shaped burner that wraps around the side and back. Ooni has since moved its gas range to the Koda 2 family, and that’s what Amazon stocks now.

Koda 12 Koda 16
Pizza size 12 inches 16 inches
Burner Single rear burner L-shaped burner (side and back)
Portability Very portable Heavier; better on a table
Turning Turn often L-burner means less turning

Which Was Better?

The Koda 16 was the better pizza oven for most homes. The bigger opening is far easier to launch into, and the L-shaped flame cooks more evenly. The Koda 12 was the better travel oven: light, compact and cheap.

What Replaced Them: The Koda 2 Range

Ooni’s current gas ovens are the Koda 2 (14-inch stone), the Koda 2 Pro (18-inch stone) and the Koda 2 Max (two 12-inch pizzas or one 20-inch). All three use Ooni’s tapered-flame G2 burner for more even heat across the stone.

  • Wanted a Koda 12? Get the Koda 2. It’s still portable at about 35 lbs but gives you a roomier 14-inch stone.
  • Wanted a Koda 16? Get the Koda 2 Pro. Ooni says it has about 30% more capacity than its predecessor, and it adds a Bluetooth temperature hub.

The Koda 2 is Ooni’s current 14-inch propane oven and the easiest place to start if you want gas convenience without giving up 950°F heat. Ooni’s tapered-flame G2 burner spreads heat across the stone more evenly than the original Koda, and a thicker stone recovers faster between pizzas.

At about 35 lbs it is still light enough to move between the patio and a campsite.

Key specs:

  • Fuel: propane only (28 mBar regulator and hose included)
  • Cooking area: 14-inch stone
  • Temperature range: 375–950°F
  • Weight: about 35 lbs

PROS:

  • Even heat from the tapered-flame burner
  • Thicker stone for back-to-back pizzas
  • Portable for its size

CONS:

  • Propane only, no natural gas option
  • No door, so wind affects heat

FAQ

Is the Koda 16 worth buying used?

It can be if the price is right and the stone and burner are in good shape. But the Koda 2 Pro is a meaningful upgrade in size and heat distribution.

Do Koda 12 and Koda 16 accessories fit the Koda 2?

Not always. Covers and some accessories are model-specific. Check the listing before buying.

Can I replace a cracked Koda 12 stone?

Yes. Our best pizza stones guide includes a 13.2-inch cordierite replacement that fits Ooni 12-inch ovens.

Bottom Line

Between the originals, the Koda 16 was the better home oven. Today, buy the Koda 2 instead of a Koda 12, or the Koda 2 Pro instead of a Koda 16. We also have an older Ooni Koda 16 review.
